Produtivity - Habits beat To do Lists

I am [used to be] a To Do List  freak but found myself being not getting much done! I saw some material on doing a to do habits list... and after doing it all March, I can attest to habit lists working. so I doivided the day into three parts... [ based on Tim Ferriss 4 hours work week and find that I am getting much more done... the habits are tasks like "Walking", email check, coffee, facebook pages etc...

And then 2 other parts of the day - 5am to 9am, 1pm to 5pm and lastly 7 to 11pm... it works.

Suez Open Again

Todays' news is that the Ever Given has been "unwedged" and the canal is open again... although the news yesterday was that the disruption would go on until Christmas... luckily for the perveyours of concern, there was 8 new covid-19 cases in Brisbane [ and a sacking for refusing the flu vaccine ] so my prediction is that we will hear very little about the Suez now it isn't going to take 6 weeks to fix.

Suez Canal

Who has been through the Suez Canal? I have, on board the maiden votage of Spectrum of the Seas about 2 years ago... [Experience Oracle] I have a certioficate to celebrate the time... at the time it s very "ho hum."

The really interesting event was a "Pirate Drill" what to do if the pirates attacked - tha PA system was RS but the drill kept going and I understand armed security board with automatic weapons.... now I have to admit I adn't thought of the Suez Canal before [except when it was opend] or since until the Evergiven got stuck.

Fleeceware?

How could you believe anything a person Charlie Brown says? That is the name the tech guy on 6PR  - the local talkback radio I listen to on my walks..

Well this morning he was giving advice about Fleeceware - Phone apps that can charge up to $60/week when the "free" download is just 3 days in... over $3000 a year!

His advice  " - Never accept that a FREE app won't charge you if you need to enter your credit card"  [ I am having issues deleting mine from a service I was using.... I couldn't delete it, even thou  they said the service had ben cancelled.]

So Charlies' advice "Never enter your credit card for a free trial"

Podcasts

Today I have listened to two podcasts - Mike Rowe [As I heard it], John Maxwell [Leadership] and James Altucher [Choose yourself], and came away with many ideas - perhaps the trouble is too many ideas but at least I have something to exercise my mind.

Then I saw that of over the 1,000,000 podcasts the average number of listeners is just 20 people - the three mentioned above have collectively over 1,000,000 listeners... so many must have vry few [Is it true that most things that have averages have most under the avaerage?]

Fun Facts update

Some time ago, I was overcome with excitement, when I met Dr Karl Kruszelnicki in the Qantas lounge on a trip... yes I asked for and received his authograph... on a napkin. Did I feel silly - just a little but "hey it was Dr Karl.

My heart warmed when I saw him react to a twitter complaint about overdone packaging for someone who had just purchased his book... he said "thanks for letting mr know, I will do better!"

Politics - good enough?

Some years ago, after meeting the ALP Cabinet Member Kim Beazley senior at a school do in Bunbury, I set myself the goal of being a politician. I did all the necessary things. expressing a counter vie.. had a police interview to become a commissioner of Declarartions [ yes  and they came to my house]! Everything was on track.

I was choosen to serve as the parents representative on Chisholm Colleges board but was chastised by the head master for expressing a counter view to that of the board members who had been running the college for years - I objected to the builder being given a large extension job without a quote process [ he had been on the board for years - long after his kids had finished school] Anyway, I was told my background wouldn't hold up for public office - being young, opposing the Vietnam War, etc... not Catholic - the upshot was I decided that I was made of the right stuff to be a politician.

The going ons of the last few months in Canberra have caste a different light on what goes for being the "right stuff" but time has marched on and it is now too late to get back on the track [ or step of getting their  convention has it.]

Yesterday, on 6PR our local talkback radio, Liam Barlett, asked questions of a recently elected Parliamentary party  leader of Legalis Cannabis  [ Her party used the distrabution of preferences known as preference whispering  to finish 5th in a 6 horse race for a seat in the South West Legialive Council of WA ] like what is you policy on Education, Donations by Developers etc... and when the lady said they didn't have any he made fun of her. within moments the listeners chimed in to make fun of her... but surely a single idea party shouldn't waste time on aletrnative ideas until they have secured their first policy accepted??

Mybe I should have pursued that original goal?

Football is back!

The 2021 Australian Football League [AFL] got underway this weekend and with some rule tweeks, is watchable agin... [ Quaters returned ro 20 minutes plus time on, standing the mark rule has been re-imposed and contraversily, a medical sub is now allowed.] My team the West Coast Eagles played on Sunday in 36c heat and won!!

There were upsets, like Adelaide beating Geelong [ Who picked that?] predtible results [ Richmond - winning and Dusty Martin starring - all according to script] and the usualy season threatening injuries  [Alex Pearce and Matt Rowell] and Patrick Dangerfield on Report for a head clash... ahhh nearly normal!

I have been a reluctant follower for a few years whn it was just a mess like Rugby League but this weekend was GREAT!

Trust the science?

James Altucher has a new book SKIP THE LINE which gives his take on the 10,000 hour of pracrice - he says that you should ex[eriment and that teaches you more than doing the sames thing 10,000 hours... his example is science [ you know thw politician and woke pople keep saying " trust the science"] where they try to disprove something... if it didn't continually change we would still beleve in a flat world, the earth revolving around the sun, and germs being safe!... yet we are preached to that science has the answers to covid-19 and really they are learning everyday. Why do they say that this is what we believe today but it might be different tomorow... that would be easier to get your head around wouldn't it?

Any way, James makes a good argument for trying different things until one works.... if they all worked things would be so boring. I tried 6 different produts on 5 different lists over the last year.... it show that hat used to work doesn' but actually 30 different things tht used to work now don't it is time to fail some more. I can understand that - success comes faster when you fail quicker.

Kenya and the missing generation

A few years ago as was part of a group that donated goats to a village near Kisomo [ on Lake Victoria, Kenya] and it still brings back memories...

Great memories: Meeting President Obahma's grandmother
Not so goos Memories: The journey to the the Masa Mara. I now have a new definition of a road! it was cheaper and obviouslt quiker to fly back to nairobi at the end... the wonders of an Amex Credit Card!

Horrific Memories: There were no people between 20 and 35 yesr old at the viiage we visited as they had died from HIV which had been denied as a disease until everyone died.

Maybe Covid-19 deniers can take not?

Should you have a MENTOR?

You are never too good to need a Mentor. They provide advice and guidance, they empower and enable.

Geat achievers acknowldge mentors:

Quincy Jones credits Ray Charles with lots of his success.

OPrah took advice and direction from Maya Angelou.

For company leaders who work without Mentors, achievement is 50% of that achieved where a mentor is actively sought.

What is the difference between coaching & mentoring?

What is the difference between coaching & mentoring?

Coaching is a trained and practiced skill that helps high-performing employees set and reach personal goals that are in line with organisational objectives, taking their skills and leadership capabilities to the next level.

Mentoring is based on the experiences of the mentor and focuses on the development of the mentee as a whole person. Mentoring does not require any specialised training, and can be undertaken by anyone senior (or junior, in some cases) to the mentee.

Mmmm it seems like coaching is about getting a better result where as mentoring is getting a beter person! That seems to explain why coachs can be arseholes and be well liked. Mentors are just themselves, good or bad, So if you would like a mentor, warts and all, I put up my hand!

Labour complete 36% rout of Liberals

Saturdays's Western Australian State Election has the ALP [lead by Mark McGowan] completed a rout of their competition the Liberals winning 42 seats [so far] of the 50 on offer, the liberals gaining gender equity [1 of each] so noa it will be interesting to see what absolute power does to MGowan. Let's hope he can keep the loopy left in line!

There was no way McGowan wasn't going to be re-elected!

When getting my coffee this morning, the lady behind the counter said "we could have saved $millions... by not having the elections... there was no way McGowan wasn't going to win."

Anyway, I did my duty and went to an early voting station and cast my vote - to give you some idea of how hotly contested the election is... my understanding was I was in the aelectorate of Perth but they gave me voting papers for Morley... mmm, I basically got my name crossed off for attending.

Italy in another time

About 30 years ago, I visitied Italy...

The first 2 weeks were spent in Rome... it was hot as Europens summers tend to be... but the train ticket that allowed unlimited travel was fantastic... it was a case of picking a direction and going until the place looked worth a stop - the place that springs to mind is the garden at Tivoli that is mentioned on a travel site as: "Tivoli is a must-see, as it's absolutely gorgeous, (the ride out there is too) and it's a wonderful way to spend a summer day. In August you may want a break from Rome's oppressive heat, and Tivoli is perfect" which discribes exactly how it was!

And the train trip back was wonderful - 30 plus sun factor sunscreen unnecessary as the sum was filtered by the eurpoean smog.. where as in Australia I would have been a crimson red from a full day in the sun. I wonder id covid-19 has reduced the crowd numbers but I recall we weren't knocked over in the rush.

Politics are dirty business

The guest speaker at the National Press Club lunch on Turesday was ex Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

It was interesting to see Kevin [07] spin his yarn about press influence and "fake' news. He was asked about the stories of how he was rude and aggrfessive to staff and his answer was "Read my autobiography and the 1500 notes contained there before you ask impertinent questions" I might read it to see his version of what happened.

All I recall about Kevin is that I went to bed one evening and he was PM but by morning Julia gillard was PM - the speed it happened was incredible... now the rules have changed so it will take a while if there is a move on Anthony Albanese....

What the last two weeks has shown though is that politicas is a dirty business....

My Dan Andrews' Moment

I went to a Saturday lunch for the NIC [ Nothing Importanrt Club] but ended up after a fall in the emergency ward at QE11... no sympathy received as it must have been my fault. I have no memory of it at all... with no idea what happened or how I got there aprt from being shouted at by those close to me... I obviously caused it is the reasoning. However, I wonder what they will say about the news today that

"Dan Andrews was taken to hospital after a fall..." no reason given just that it happened.

Mmmm such is life.

3 things I learnt from being in wikipedia

I was involved in the pioneering of email marketing from 1999 to 2004 [ and still now] and those who sit in dark corners - than they used bulletin boards but now they infect Social Media, where they can hide behind a scrren name - got great comfort by making my life hell. This is what I learned.

1.    The Real People don't care: I did lots of marketing for a guy... let's call him David, who marketed a scurity product, and he stuck with me through thick and thin. the results were good [open rates back then were up to 70% for unsolicted emails against 3 - 5% now] I used to see him have a stand st exhibitions [ he travelled from rural Victoria to grab a stand [remember those - pre covoid days]. Well the faceless people used to harass him by continuously phoning and heavy breathing etc... [ he told me once he opened a brown paper package that was filled with live cockroaches] but until he soldhis business many years later he sung my prasies.

                                                                    Wayne Mansfield

2.     You have to control the narrative.
With my son Matthew, we won the Social Media ontract for the FIFAWorld Cup 2022 until someone who missed out printed out our wikipedia page without the refrences changed, and submitted to the Qatari organising committee! They cancelled the job but told me... "if your government hates you that much, you must be good. Next time you should tell us first!"

3.     It never goes away: Fast forward to 2021 and people still site the article on wikipedia as a reason why I am a "crook" That is 17 years since we were fined as part of making the law on email marketing [ half of the case went in out favour but you wouldn't know from what you read,

Horse shit to that!

I was reminded that the problem of the turn of the 20th century was that the great cities of the world were being covered in the left overs of the fuel of transportation. If you have walked the streets of London [ I have!] there are very high curbs. These cirbs were to stop horse shit being washed into the downstairs of houses when it rained - which is most days in London. This unsolvable problem was solved with the rapid introduction of the motore car... horses were returned to the country, the plague of horse droppings stopped and the unsolvable problem was solved....

Fast forward to the start of the 21 st century and the cities of the worl are being killed by the left overs of cars' fuel CO2... This morning I was listening to Peter Diamandis talk about there being no left over to the current electric cars and although the take up rate is slow [Less than 5% currently] electric power stored in batteries will drive the world and cure "Warm house gases". Peter says we get 8000 times more power from the sun than we use... batteries solve the issue of storage, and will be the modern day cure to horse shit.

Responsibilty? It is different depending on the consequences

Yesterday I spoke about the CANCEL CULTURE that has become all prevausive in the world since Social Media.

Well, the politician outed was our AGM, Christian Porter, who has been dogged by saying when h was 4 years old... "One day I will be Ausralia's Prime Minister" he went to all the halls of white priveledge... Hale School, the University of Western Australia, was the Western Australian PUblic Prosecutor etc... and is a couple of steps away from that four year old's dream but he is now accused of a crime from 33 years ago by someone who is dead... he has been CANCELLED!

How do you react to that? my first thought was that he must have really pissed someone off and that is pay back but on reflection, is this how we want to live our lives?

I personally think Porter is a prick but he or we don't deserve this. consequenc to the complainer

I listened to Seth Godin this morning and he said that until recently social media played out without consequence - lose a digital game?? big deal... start again and if you don't tell anyone who would know?

Make a hatful comment from a fake account and there are no conseuences... make an annonymus report and the damage is done without consequenc to the complainer.

I have expereienced this but thought it was OK because I was pioneering new ground [ busily working in the background to correct outrihht lies]

But surely this has to stop!!

Cancel That!

I was listening to Mike Rowe [ the voice of Deadliest Catch ] talk about the Cancel culture in the U.S. and I was horrified. Apparently schools named after the nfounding fathers of the US are being renamed because of the deeds which now would offend.

I called in to get my paper and the server [ Lady behind the counter but you can't say that anymore ] as asked if "he" had been named yet - the young man who assaulted a young woman in 1988 and now was a Cabinet Minister of the Australian Government... I retorted "proving anything after 30 years would be hard" but she countered and said he was "still doing it 2 years ago" [ where that information came from is a mystery but she believes it ] so the Minister of Government will be "cancelled" due to an annonymus letter sent by "friends" of the woman who made thw claims of assault 30 years after the event. It reminded me of how school held everybody accountable for the actions of one.

Focus on The stuff you can live with

Prior to 2019, I travelled 2 weeks out of 4 and enjoyed all the perks of that - great airport lounges, fancy hotels, great meals etc... then covid-19 hit and I couldn't travel... all borders are shut and Western Australia actually went ballastic - an island in an island. So I couldn'r travel, I am working from home [ which I hate!] and my business evaporated! My response was "we are being run by highly educated Idiots!"
Well, after listening to other views I have decided to refocus and put things I can't "Personally" do any thing about [ like Travel] behind me and only worry about what I can influence - gicing blood for example.

I stopped giving blood because it became political - the HIV virus made them change the questions and being asked about same sex matters offended me... Anyway I am back giving blood which when you count plasma, you can do every 2 weeks, and I decided to donate 50 times before I am too old [ I am up to 50! now ] and technology has replced the screens [ real ] with iPads and automatic tempersture checks and I have lost that feeling of angst that stopped me way back in 2004.

So, what are you worrying about that you can do anything thing about? Put it behind you and FOCUS on what you can do... I promise you it feels better!

Listen, Learn, Lead!

One of the many mistakes I made when I was concinced to "retire" was to stop listening to podcasts on my walk each morning. Anyway I have corrected that! One of my podcasts of  choice is John Maxwell. He reminds me evry time he talks of my advice to paeople reading either napoleon Hill or Norman Vincent Peele - if you are not a person of faith or not a Christian, ignore those bits... the message is for everybody.

So today he recounts talking to a CEO ofa software company and that the best improvements came when the leadership team "just shared ideas". The basic premise is that when 10 people share 1 idea each every one has 10 ideas - the one they came with and the other 9 ideas shared! The surprising outcome of 10 ideas  experiment was that we have had that wrong... when you put two ideas togther you often get a third being the "idea sex offspring" of the two that have been thought about and often the idea is totally new...  [for more on this, listen to James Altucher talk about his daily ideas exercise - on his podcast of course] so there is wisdom in the saying Listen Learn and Lead [ an idea not acted on just dies!
