The rise and rise of womens sport

The AFLW and NRLW seasons are in full swing, the Matildas are scoring goals left right and centre, and Emma McKeon became the most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete ever earlier this year. The momentum that women’s sport has at the moment is unprecedented, but despite this, it still has a way to go to be on equal footing with men’s games.

Mediaweek spoke to Fox League presenter and journalist, Lara Pitt, and Collingwood AFLW player, Chloe Molloy, at the Ministry of Sport's Women In Sport Summit on the Gold Coast.

Once upon a time, sports broadcasting was a realm made up almost entirely of men. As more and more women get involved in all aspects of the business, however, Pitt says she wouldn’t necessarily call sports broadcasting male-dominated in 2022.

Pitt: “I’ve been in this role at Fox for 16 years, and it was initially a very entry-level position. But there was a wave of women coming through at the time in 2006, and a lot of them are still on our coverage.

“I would agree to a point that it was very male-dominated, but women are broadcasting across all codes – NRL, NRLW, AFL, AFLW, motorsport. Netball is all female faces. It’s very natural for people to constantly say that sport and broadcasting is male-dominated, but I actually don’t think it’s the case anymore.”

Sharks are on the edge of being fished out

The exact number of ocean sharks caught in 2000 is not known, but according to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), shark catches have been reported in the millions each year since the early 2000s.

However, it is important to note that shark catch data is often underreported, so the actual number of sharks caught is likely higher.

Additionally, the report also states that the numbers of oceanic sharks caught during this period were relatively small compared to other shark species and the total numbers of sharks caught. We can't keep this up without consequences that are too horrible to imagine!

Cricket is it british or indian?

Cricket is a bat and ball played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 22-yard (20-metre) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumpsz The batting side scores runs  by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielsing side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss  each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. When ten batters have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a 3rd umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match's statistical information.

Ukrain needs tanks!

Ukraine's president has thanked Western leaders for sending tanks to support the fight against Russia, but said they needed to be delivered quickly.

In his nightly address, Volodymyr Zelensky also urged the West to send long-range missiles and fighter jets.

His comments came after the US and Germany announced they would send Abrams and Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

Russia condemned the announcement as a "blatant provocation" and said any supplied tanks would be destroyed.

The tanks would "burn like all the rest," said Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman. "They are just very expensive."

Mr Zelensky said he told Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that "progress must be made in other aspects of our defence co-operation" - with Ukraine seeking supplies of long-range missiles and artillery.

He pressed not only for a prompt delivery of Western tanks but also for significant numbers: "We must form such a tank force, such a freedom force that after it strikes, tyranny will never again rise up."

While Mr Zelensky is likely to focus now on equipping the Ukrainian air force with more technologically advanced fighter jets after securing the tanks, many Western governments remain opposed to such a move - fearing the aircraft could be used to strike targets inside Russia.

In his speech to the Bundestag in Berlin on Wednesday outlining the details of the tanks plan, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz insisted there would be "no fighter jet deliveries to Ukraine".

US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that the US would send 31 M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine.

The decision to deliver the tanks was announced hours after Germany said it would send 14 of its Leopard 2s to the Ukrainian battlefield.

Berlin also cleared the way for other European countries to donate German-made tanks from their own stocks.

Ukraine has lobbied Western allies to send the equipment for months.

It hailed the twin announcements as a turning point that would allow its military to regain momentum and take back occupied territory almost a year after Moscow invaded.

It also said the tanks could help deter a potential Russian offensive in the spring.

ALP in Government is in Trouble

Just over five months after scraping into office with less than a third of the primary vote, Australia’s Labor government is already in a deepening political crisis, currently centred on the industrial relations bill that it is scrambling to push through parliament.

Despite there being only a handful of parliamentary sitting days left for 2022, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke insist that all 250 pages of the fraudulently named “Secure Jobs Better Pay” bill must go through both houses of parliament before the end of the year.

Why the rush? That can be explained only by the fear in ruling circles of mounting discontent throughout the working class over the sky-rocketing cost of living.

The government and its partners in the trade union bureaucracy are cynically depicting the bill as a means to lift wages. The exact opposite is true. It is a mechanism to bolster the capacity of the unions to suppress strikes, enforce a new wave of workplace restructuring and confine pay rises to less than half the official inflation rate, which is expected to surge to 8 percent by the end of the year.

F1 Changes - just like changing your underwear!

Following Formula 1’s rules revolution of 2022 there will be yet more changes next season – primarily concerning the floor – but why does this keep happening?

F1’s technical regulations are in a constant state of flux because the FIA is forced to make changes to keep the teams in line.

This is always heightened around the introduction of a major regulation change, such as the one we’ve just had, which often results in amendments throughout the course of the year and, more importantly, adjustments that will come into force for the following season and beyond.

The main changes for 2023 have centered on the floor of the cars, owing to the divisive nature of the teams when it comes to some cars porpoising and bouncing – and many of them feel they’re being changed for the wrong reasons.

Cheap phones?

With the world's population passing 8 billion recently, the mobile phone market reaches nearly half of that number... meaning a lot of cheap phones are made - less than US $100 - not all people can afoord iPhones at US $1,000

Good smartphones have never been cheaper. For less than a quarter of the price of a flagship phone, you can have a phone that does almost as much, minus a few fancy features such as water resistance, wireless charging, or multiple camera modules. A cheap phone’s display and internals can’t compete with the quad-HD (1440p) screens or top-of-the-line processors in flagship phones, but you don’t need those things to have a good experience.

Budget phones are excellent for someone getting their first smartphone, especially kids and teenagers, or for the terminally clumsy. If you lose or break a higher-end phone, especially one that you’re still paying your carrier for, you may have to shell out a lot to replace it—often $500 or more. If you don’t have insurance, you can end up paying the balance on a phone you don’t have anymore, plus the price of a new phone.

A budget phone purchased online or directly from the manufacturer is usually unlocked; you can use such a phone on AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon in the United States, and on most networks in the rest of the world. More important, you can use an unlocked phone on a prepaid mobile virtual network (MVNO); these low-cost carriers operate on national networks but tend to impose more data-usage restrictions or calling limits. You can use an MVNO, and if a better deal comes along, you can pop a different carrier’s SIM card into your phone and get on with your life. [Thanks to number portability]

John Farnham’s recovery from cancer surgery

John Farnham’s recovery from cancer surgery is progressing well, his family says, after he was moved into a rehabilitation facility this week.

The singer, 73, was moved from intensive care to the general ward of a Melbourne hospital “a couple of weeks ago”, his wife Jill Farnham said in a statement on Thursday morning, before he was then moved to the rehabilitation facility this week. “That in itself was terrific progress,” she said.

Will a Royal Commission fix Banksia Hill?

Even when the former head of Western Australia's Children's Court has called for a Royal Commission into the state's juvenile justice system as the fallout over the treatment of youth offenders in the state reaches boiling point, will a solution be found.

The call comes in response to a Four Corners investigation, revealing confronting footage of the treatment of a child at Banksia Hill detention centre.

On the same day, WA's current Children's Court president – Hylton Quail – again condemned the treatment of juvenile detainees at Banksia Hill.

His comments were made while sentencing a different teenager who had spent almost 64 per cent of his last stint in custody in unlawful solitary confinement, much of which was spent at the infamous unit 18 at WA's adult maximum security jail.

The boy sentenced on Monday is not the same boy Four Corners is reporting on.

Judge Quail spent almost one hour delivering his sentencing remarks for the teenager, who appeared before the court on numerous charges, including two counts of aggravated home burglary and one count of aggravated robbery.

Morrison’s secret ministries

A new book, Plagued, and News Corp publications have revealed this was to the health and finance portfolios in March 2020, and then the industry, science, energy and resources portfolio in April 2021. The latter move cut across the roles of several other ministers.

Were these the only jobs Morrison added to his own?

No. Prime Minister says hisdepartment had told him Morrison was also appointed to administer Treasury (alongside Josh Frydenberg) and the Department of Home Affairs (whose minister was Karen Andrews) in May 2021.

Morrison initially said “there were a number that were considered at the time for safeguard reasons” but he cannot recall acting on those.

But later on Tuesday, in a lengthy post on Facebook, he said he’d added those departments to his suite of responsibilities “as an added administrative precaution, as a ‘belts and braces’ approach”.

F1 Changes - What now for Ricciardo?

Daniel Ricciardo’s motorsport journey began, like so many, glued to a television. In his case, this was often a late-night indulgence, watching Formula 1, NASCAR and all forms of motorsport at home in Perth, Western Australia. Bitten by the bug, he began karting aged nine and moved into Formula Ford at 15. Racing a car as old as he was, Daniel’s results were not spectacular, but he caught the eye and won a scholarship into the 2006 Formula BMW Asia series where, in his rookie season, he took two victories and a pole position, finishing the year in third place.

Daniel relocated to Europe, contesting Formula Renault 2.0 Italy in 2007. After a learning year, he won the Formula Renault 2.0 WEC title in 2008 and followed in the footsteps of many all-time greats by winning, in 2009, the British Formula 3 title. A few weeks later he made his F1 testing debut, topping the timesheets for Red Bull Racing in the Jerez young driver test.

This performance led to a test and reserve seat at Toro Rosso for 2010, which Daniel combined with a move up to Formula Renault 3.5. He narrowly missed out on the World Series title after impressive wins in Spain, Monaco, Germany and Hungary but was rewarded with regular FP1 appearances for Toro Rosso in the first half of 2011. Next came a loan to HRT for the second half of the season and an F1 race debut at Silverstone in the British Grand Prix.

Daniel transitioned smoothly into a race seat at Toro Rosso for 2012 and, in two years with the Italian squad, consistently punched above his weight, gaining a reputation as a demon qualifier, confident overtaker and a racer’s racer, who enjoyed the scrap as much as the result. He scored in 13 of his 39 races and was awarded the Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini in recognition of his efforts.

Daniel was promoted to the senior Red Bull Racing team for 2014. He took a debut F1 victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, followed by further wins in Hungary and Belgium to finish third in the Drivers’ Championship, and was awarded the prestigious Laureus World Sports Award for Breakthrough of the Year.
