Are you the guy who....

Last year when I walked on a particular route, the thorny bits that cross the footpath used to bite me! To stop this I purchsed some Secateurs from Bunnings and went on a mission to cut down anything that was bitey. Little did I know anyone would care!

On Saturday, a lady at the Morley Galleria took me aside and asked "was I the man who used to cut the branches when I walked." The old self would have denied that but because I have changed my thoughts towards" haters" I fessed up. " Yes" I said.

To which she said... "The stuff has come back and we were wondering if you would come back our way and trim them again." She said " I was talking with my daughter, and we discussed you and I said I thought you came here every day and I would ask you."

It is strrange, the only recognition I had previously got was from people telling me to stop! I now embrace critics and haters because they spread the word of who I am. I now embrace those who comment on me because they at least know who I am!

Mmmm the Eagles are shit!

I have to admit that I am an Eagles football fan - but I like to watch the fremanle Dockers play - win or lose - much better than watching the Eales [ epecially this year when they are the whipping boys for everyone else - Western Bulldogs won by more than 100 points and 15 players scored goals. }

Apparntly there is science about this - when you what any sport for sports sake you feel happier when anyone wins [or loses] than watching you team win. The difference is significant too. I think until they start winning agin I will NOT watch the Eagles becuse when they lose it is bad for your selfesteem too.

This is interesting stuff - I didn't agree that the Eagles were "Flat track bullies" but I have to admit I didn't feel the need to push back.

It didn't take long!

In the world I grew up in, history was written by the winners and if you lost, yOu got what yo got.

Recently the alp became australia's governing party even though 2/3rds of the people voted for someone else. The nfirst act was to add the aborginal and torres straight isklander flags to the Australian flag for press conferences.

The last Labour government was Kevin 07 and they started with the "apology".

This morning, the front cover of the Western Australian was written in somw language NOT English and I was supposed to embrace it - not me!

Never trust your gut when data tells you otherwise!

According to a new book by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz callws Never trust your gut when data tells you otherwise! alot of the things we believe to be true are disproved by data.

Would you rather start a business [based on its chance of succss} when you are 20 or 60? whilst that sinks in, the data clear shows that your chances of success are 3 times  as great if you are 60 compared to 20 but we are influenced by movies made like The Social Network based loosely on Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook success, because honestlt, who would go to a movie about a successful 60 year old?

What having no power does to your day!

Earlier on Monday I talked to you about it raining in Perth - I didn't mention it was stormy -with wind  and lightning etc and we experienced what comes with that - Power outages!

So I was ready for a very productive day until the power went out - The day, through no action by me, was ruined! I have lsitened to Grant Cardone on a podcast talking about there being no power in Miami which mucked up his day and he could influence that in the future.... how I thought? And he said he could get a genrator. His reasoning was 1. power outages happening every year in Miami and 2. he could do it!

My thouhts are thst losing power in Perth is so rare that I just need to have something I can do if it hsppens agaon.... I had a VA in the Philipines a few years ago, which was struck by a typhon and area whwre she lived lost pawer - she wrote to me snd said

" Wayne, we don't have power so we are going to a shopping centre that has generator power and we will be off the air for about 4 hours whilst we take the bus there but we will be operational in the shopping centre."

How would you handle a power outage?

It's pissing down with rain in Perth...

I wondered how many people gave up on their morning walk today in Perth - I did hear some speak to their dog " it is raining so no walk toay!" as if the dog cares?

I have a commitment to walk everyday, regardless of rain, hail or shine [luckily Perth has more shine than hail] and I walk everyday! When did I last miss the walk? I can't remember evr missing whether it was Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, Doha or London - it is amazing what happens early in the morning - the best walking gear includes the Bunnings umbrella and New Balance [6x wide] walkers.

Did you miss today or any day because it was 'too..." something hot, cold, wet, windy etc.

Haters are good for you!

One of the things I have learned is that influence happens when people talk about you.

Way back when it was the way of the world to svoid negstive comments I hoped people would never find my wikipedia page because it had been written by a hater - when we were SACKED after a competitor had shown it to the head of the 2022 World Cip in Doha, Qatar.. The comment was [ I often repeated it but with tomgue in cheek] made by the person who was sacking us... ' You must be good if your gsovernment hstes you that much" however that was way back in 2005, over 17 years ago! And I have , as it turns out ' wasted many hours and been frustrated many timed, trying to grt the listing updated to reflect the true situation.

I have started listening to podcasts again and two I listen to make the comment unless it is absolutle slander it doe you good. In fact, Grant Cardone says..." Haters serve a purpose which means they spread your fame so that when people think of you product or service, they think of you."

My feelings were tested about this yesterdsy when an old friend tried to get s meeting with  a software devlper for me and the answer was "we would never meet with Wayne Mansfield even if our survival depnded on it"

My friend was all apologetic [ he had the call on speaker phone so I heard it all ] but I felt eleated because the decision was made because they knew me. They would spread the story again and more people would know of me.... suddenly I wanted people everywhere to hate me and thus spread the word about who I was.

Australian footy slang explained

The Australian Football League (AFL) is the professional league of Aussie rules ‘footy’, a game that is unique to Australia. The sport has been played for over a hundred years and the AFL Grand Final held annually in Australia.

Shirtfront

'Shirtfront' received a lot of attention after it was used by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott who said he would "shirtfront" Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2014.

According to the Oxford Australian Dictionary, a 'shirtfront' is a noun which can refer to 'a fierce tackle, usually delivered by the shoulder to the chest of an opponent'. It can also be used a verb which can refer to 'the act of delivering such a tackle'.

Behind, Mark

Scoring is very important in any game and in AFL, players score with goals and points.

A point can also be called a 'behind'.

When the player catches a ball, it's called a 'mark' or you can say: he's marked it which means 'caught' it. If a player takes a mark, they get a free kick.

"Sick of it’: why so many Australians are voting early this election

A record number of Australians are voting early in the 2022 federal election, with many saying they’re “sick” of the drawn-out election campaign and want to avoid expected queues on 21 May.

Some 314,095 Australians cast their ballots on the first day of early voting this year, almost three times the 120,000 people that voted on day one of pre-poll in 2019.

As of Friday more than 1.2 million of the 17 million Australians registered to vote had already pre-polled after just four days of early voting.

The safe Nationals-held seat of Hinkler topped the list, with 18,060 early voters, followed by the marginal seats of Gilmore (16,902), Paterson (16,271) and Richmond (15,111), according to data released by the Australian Electoral Commission.

In 2021, the parliament passed legislation limiting the pre-polling period to 12 days before the election to balance the “opportunity to participate in an election as a voter with the logistic demands placed on those who participate as contestants”.

Nevertheless, the AEC said if trends continued, up to half of all votes may be cast prior to election day this year at the nations’s 550 early voting centres.

Ukraine conflict: Russian chemical attack claim fact-checked

Russia is using a familiar tactic to blame an adversary for attacks it has not carried out - on this occasion accusing Ukrainian forces of blowing up a fertiliser storage facility.

The purpose of the attack, says Russia's defence ministry, was so that the Ukrainians could then accuse Russian forces of having launched a chemical weapons attack.

Russia also claims that the Ukrainian security forces have attempted to set up a second "false flag" event, by appealing for bodies to be used to "simulate a Russian air attack".

There's no evidence that either of these claims is true.

Moscow has a history of falsely accusing its opponents of staging "provocations" which either never happened at all, or were subsequently carried out by themselves or their allies.

What has Moscow said?

A Russian Ministry of Defence briefing on 11 May asserted that Ukrainian forces had "carried out an explosion of a tanker with fertiliser, presumably ammonium nitrate, which resulted in a cloud of orange smoke that dissipated after some time".

According to Moscow, the aim of the explosion, which occurred in the Kharkiv region, was to accuse Russia of using chemical weapons in order to "extract additional military aid from the West by the Kyiv regime".

No evidence was given in support of the claim that Ukrainian forces were responsible for the explosion.

Dusty snub is a serious problem for the AFL

Richmond superstar Dustin Martin’s refusal to speak to the media has sparked heated debate on player welfare and their obligations to the broadcasters who pay their salaries.

In March, Martin took personal leave following the Tigers’ Round 1 loss to Carlton to deal with the tragic death of his father in December.

“It was great to see him back. I think the fans and the AFL in general were happy to see him step on the ground,” Richmond coach Damien Hardwick told reporters in the post-match press conference.

“It was a pretty touching moment when he kicked that goal and the whole side got to him. I’d say there were a few misty eyes in the coaches box and down below as well.

“It was a nice moment to get some reward for the hard work he‘s put in for himself. We’re pleased. He got through. He’ll get better again next week. That’s exciting for us. He is an energy guy who brings an enormous amount of spirit to our group. It’s just great to have him back.”

But when Fox Footy presenter Sarah Jones approached the three-time Norm Smith medallist for an interview after the final siren, Martin waved her off.

Why the border wars had to end

 It was a jolting juxtaposition.

Exactly 239 seconds after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, her voice slightly cracking, revealed Queensland had its deadliest day of the pandemic, with six lives lost, she announced an end to the state’s controversial border restrictions

After almost two years, Queensland was finally open to the rest of Australia. No tests required, no border forms, no worries.

“It’s a big decision,” Palaszczuk conceded on Thursday.

“But it’s the decision that’s needed as we reach the peak of this Omicron wave.

“Operationally, the police are needed at the front line and they have done an absolutely superb job and we are so close to that 90 per cent that I am happy to bring forward that decision for 1am Saturday.”

The federal election is fast approaching.

Pre-poll voting starts in Australia on 9 May 2022.  If you can, cast a pre-poll vote at an early voting centre before leaving Australia. A list of available locations is available on the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) website.

If you can’t vote early before you leave, the AEC recommends overseas voters participate in this election by postal vote in case you are unable to vote at an overseas location. To cast a postal vote from outside Australia, you need to complete a postal vote application.

Postal voting

The AEC is working day and night to ensure postal votes are sent as soon as possible. Our embassies and consulates are already receiving and processing postal votes from Australians overseas.

  • Even though postal vote applications close on 18 May 2022, you’re encouraged to apply, complete and return your vote as soon as possible to ensure you beat the cut off.
  • To be counted, your postal vote must be completed and witnessed by 6pm AEST on 21 May. The AEC can only accept ballot papers received in Australia by 3 June 2022 (13 days after the election).

Russian Victory Day

Two Russian reporters appear to have posted at least 30 articles to a pro-Kremlin news site, lenta.ru, on Monday criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and his government’s suppression of critics.

CNN reviewed the articles -- which were almost immediately taken down -- some pegged to the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany, others criticizing the Russian leader for using Victory Day to justify his bloody onslaught into Ukraine.

Reporters Egor Polyakov and Alexandra Miroshnikova made several claims in their articles, including that Russian defense officials were “lying to relatives” about those killed in the sinking of the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet flagship Moskva and accusing Putin of launching one of the "bloodiest wars of the 21st century."

Polyakov and Miroshnikova are both business editors at lenta.ru, a major pro-Kremlin Russian news site. The outlet's parent company was recently bought by Russian Sberbank, which is subject to US sanctions for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

CNN reached out to the two reporters and lenta.ru for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

The Russian parliament passed a law in early March criminalizing what it considers to be falsehoods about Russia’s war in Ukraine. Breaking that law can result in a 1.5 million ruble (around $21,467) fine or up to 15 years in prison. Putin and state-owned media still refer to the full-scale ground war in Ukraine as a "special operation."

Independent Russian news site Mediazone published what it said was a statement from Polyakov and Miroshnikova after the articles appeared.
