Australia is a big country!

Originally published in Rebootology

While the east coast [ especially New South Wales ] is in the grip of once in a century drought, Western Australia is having its wettest winter for 53 years!!

Yesterday I was at the Dowerin Field Day, the biggest agricultural field day in the southern Hemisphere, and business was brisk... farmers were expecting records crops at 30 year high prices and according to reports from the organisers, they were spending with Gay Abandon.

And I met up with David Young a client from 30 years ago who said "You would be prod of me!" and proceed to show and tell me of his new business success.

Aaah the rain makes people do strange things.

Don't they get it?

Originally published in Rebootology

So, what do you think they are doing to my subscription fee?? No not reducing it... they are putting it up! so I can watch sport on my 4000 resolution TV [ which I haven't purchased yet ] and have wall to wall cricket that nobody wants to watch with me....

Is this the start of the end ??? I think so.

Free doesn't mean good

Today's mission:

Originally published in Rebootology

After a challenging couple of days -challenges about money, illness and travel - surely enough to get anyone demotivated (if that is a word.) So I should feel pumped but I feel bad.
The best thing is to accept that.

And I am going to give myself SHORT period to wallow. Yes I did say that.

Then I will take time to review what went wrong. Hopefully I will be able to turn the feeling into something I can benefit from going forward.

This sounds simplistic and cliched, of course, but it is extremely difficult to do.

However it is true. And more importantly, all research indicates it does work.

Wish me [ and you ] luck.

Boxes of photos

Originally published in Rebootology

Do you remember memories in a box?

Just yesterday I was at a family gathering and we were sorting through photos to grab a snapshot of a life well lived.

There were black and white, coloured photo's, slides, 8mm and 16mm movies... and everything in between. This raises the question - what will we do in the future??

At my place I am not sure there is a "box of memories".

Live it up a notch

Originally published in Rebootology

It has been a challenging week... sickness, brother passing, bank issues... so the question becomes "How do you react?"

Just heard a little rant by Dickie Armour quoting Les Brown: Get out and "Live it up a notch" My own saying is that the world doesn't give a shit about you so just get on with it...

So, here is my advice:

Live it up a notch!

Tell us how we did...

Originally published in Rebootology

That is the email from my bank after my accounts were decimated by a fraud attack.

Well in a word SHIT!

After advising me some one was taking money out of my account by ATM use on the other side of the country - how did they get the pin number [ maybe a suspect ATM fitted with a camera?] - they cancelled my cards mid travelling, promised to send by registered mail, and a quicker fix was greeted with "If you are going to be unco-operstaive I can't help you CLICK hung Up "

Well a week and 1 day later still not fixed... replacement card arrives ordinary mail, call to bank says "Your call is important but we are busy waiting time 17 minutes...

I am reluctant to waste time giving feedback as they will obviously treat it the same way as they current treat me - like SHIT!

7 Second Challenges - what are they?

Originally published in Rebootology

The 7-second challenge is popular because unlike other fun challenges, it easy, cheap and can be played anywhere; House parties, hangout with friends, school, detention, bridal showers.

The only problem with the 7-second challenge is that you can quickly run out of seven-second challenge ideas; things to do under seven seconds.

To solve this issue, here is a list of interesting seven-second challenge ideas. Not all the listed ideas can easily be completed within 7 seconds.

Where is the fun if there are only easy seven seconds ideas?

Enjoy!

Step Back Start Again - The Magic of Neuroplasticity

Originally published in Rebootology

Just in case you’ve managed to miss all the hype, neuroplasticity is an umbrella term referring to the ability of your brain to reorganise itself, both physically and functionally, throughout your life due to your environment, behaviour, thinking, and emotions.

The concept of neuroplasticity is not new and mentions of a malleable brain go all of the way back to the 1800s, but with the relatively recent capability to visually “see” into the brain allowed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), science has confirmed this incredible morphing ability of the brain beyond a doubt.

The concept of a changing brain has replaced the formerly held belief that the adult brain was pretty much a physiologically static organ or hard-wired, after critical developmental periods in childhood. While it’s true that your brain is much more plastic during the early years and capacity declines with age, plasticity happens all throughout your life.

The short version:

It is never too late to start again!!

The downside of Too Many Challenges

Originally published in Rebootology

Challenges can be a great motivators, as they can keep you engaged and interested in every day life. For many people, having to overcome some level of difficulty in their every day life is much preferable to the boredom.

However, this positive effect can only go so far. If life becomes so challenging that it’s practically impossible – it can reduce your motivation and have a very negative impact on quality of life.

The challenges of life are likely to be intrinsic to the every day living, but when they become too challenging, you should take a break to allow you to re-power.

When is the best time to plan a break - before you need one... not after you have succumbed to the pressure of life.

When is your next break?? Mine is panned for September!

Carlton No I wasn't there... I am in my car in Perth 4000 kilometres away.

Originally published in Rebootology

Yesterday I went on a round trip to Moora via Jurein Bay - about 500 kilometres but before I left someone took out $100 from my bank account via a Mastercard and tried another $400 which my bank stopped... now that was happening in Carlton Victoria and I was in Perth Western Australia - about 4000 kilometres apart.

So, in the 500 kilometre drive we saw a few cars, millions of sheep and a couple of people - that is an area that is larger than many countries in Europe... not much has changed in 100 years there BUT 21st century robbers were at my bank account.

All's well except it will be 10 working days before a new card,

It reminded me of the saying everything that happens today was impossible sometime in the past - can you imagine being stolen from and it is happening 4,000 kms away... but some clever machine worked out that the transaction was fraud... however I had to wait 15 minutes on the phone "your call is very important to us but we are busy the wait is 10 minutes [ it was 15 ]" so by the time I spoke to some person I was agitated... maybe late for the Jurein appointment due in 2 hours... and without access to my $$$'s

Getting petrol at Gingers on the Great Northern Highway at Upper Swan [ yes it is a place ] I used the card but it was declined... so with internet banking... something that was "Impossible" 10 years ago, I transferred to a different card and was able to pay.

Lots to think about in a "Day in the Life".

Unless you attempt to do something beyond that which you have already mastered, you’ll never grow.

Can you imagine seeing fast growth in your second life starting in the next few months?

Wonders of the world

Originally published in Rebootology

Sometimes we forget the little things in life as we battle the horror the television news brings into our living rooms each evening. If it's not terror, Iraq, car road trauma it's the politicians blatantly lying to us. Even the distraction of my beloved sport holds little comfort - the cheating in cricket in the South Africa was a farce, the West Coast Eagles using trickery to get players off, and drugs in sport becoming acceptable if "we" get the medals.

So, when this little story came across my desk, sent in by Maverick Spiriter Kevin Bolt, it immediately struck a cord and I just had to share it with you.

"A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present "Seven Wonders of the World." Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes:

1. Egypt's Great Pyramids
2. Taj Mahal
3. Grand Canyon
4. Panama Canal
5. Empire State Building
6. St. Peter's Basilica
7. China's Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. "The girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many."

The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.

"The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the '7 Wonders of the World' are:

1. To See
2. To Hear
3. To Touch
4. To Taste
5. To Feel
6. To Laugh
7. And to Love."

The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The
things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous!"

Kevin writes: "A gentle reminder -- that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man."

And in the next email, a friend from Tasmania felt she had to share this gem:

Back again, they just gave me the quote of the day so had to pass it on to you.

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO WOO - what a ride.

Great philosophy I think.

There just is!

Originally published in Rebootology

In times of turmoil… droughts at home, earthquakes in Indonesia, civil unrest in the USA, I find it helps to take a step back and count my blessings.

Many times what I think is fantastic others will consider a disaster… and this story that I had cross my desk this morning puts things into perspective.:

In the Eye of the Beholder

One day a father, of a very wealthy family, took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people can be. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from the trip, the father asked his son,"How was the trip?"

"It was great Dad!"

"Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.

"Oh yeah," said the son.

"So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered,

" I saw we have one dog and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them."

With this the boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added,

"Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

With a over half of 2018 officially spent, let’s reflect on the good and bad of the first 90 days of the year, reset our visions and look forward to a stimulating 175 days of the rest of the year.

But remind yourself each morning… there is no good or bad… there just is!

Puppies for Sales

Originally published in Rebootology

Everything can’t be how we would always want it. As I was checking through my email, this one jumped out at me. This email was called “Puppies for Sale.”

There is a strong message here… make the most of what you have and realise that there is beauty everywhere that often depends on YOUR perspective not mine.

Enjoy “Puppies for Sales”

A store owner was tacking a sign above his door that read "Puppies For Sale."

Signs like that have a way of attracting small children, and sure enough, a little boy appeared under the store owner's sign. "How much are you going to sell the puppies for?" he asked.

The store owner replied, "Anywhere from $30 to $50."
The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. "I have $2.37," he said. "Can I please look at them?"

The store owner smiled and whistled and out of the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his store followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur.

One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said, "What's wrong with that little dog?"

The store owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn't have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame.

The little boy became excited. "That is the puppy that I want to buy."

The store owner said, "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you."

The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, "I don't want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for."
The store owner countered, "You really don't want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies."

To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace.

He looked up at the store owner and softly replied, "Well, I don't run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!"

We ALL need someone who Understands!

Looking to add some much-needed income to your retirement savings Now you have left the workforce, Here are some examples:

Originally published in Rebootology

Carol Merchasin, an author and former law firm partner in Philadelphia, now livies with her husband in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
"My husband and I boosted our retirement income by leveraging what we did before we retired into less stressful and more part time employment that doesn't require being in an office or even in a particular place," Merchasin says. "When I left my law firm, I continued doing training but only as an independent contractor, often doing webcasts from Mexico. Now, ten years later, at almost 70 years old, I still do webcasts and I develop and audit training programs. All from wherever I want to be."
Merchasin also published a book on Mexico called This is Mexico: Tales of Culture and Other Complications and does speaking engagements on Mexican culture from a U.S. expatriate perspective. Her husband, also a lawyer, invested in a small property with three apartments that he now rents out to short term visitors to San Miguel. "Our long term strategy has been to support ourselves without touching our nest egg until we were 70, but we are still keeping with that strategy for a few more years," she says. "Boosting retirement income for us has meant not taking anything out and allowing it to grow as long as we're still able to work comfortably at our own pace."
Financial experts say that Merchasin is on to something, and that, since retirees may not be saving enough for retirement, they should seek extra income while they're in retirement. "Living comfortably in retirement isn't so much about how much money you have, but more importantly what counts is having a solid cash flow plan in place that includes a very clear income and distribution strategy, says Gary Plessl, who co-authored The Book on Retirement.

As of 2013, the median retirement account balance among all households ages 55 to 64 was only $US14,500.I

9.Seek to minimize start-up risk but have maximum upside potential.
10.Get your idea out there as fast as possible even if it’s not quite ready by setting must-hit deadlines. Let the market tell you if you have a winner or not. If not – move on and fail forward fast! If it’s got potential – then you can make it better.
11.Find partners and team members who are strong where you are weak and appreciate being paid on results.

What are you doing?

Originally published in Rebootology

Yesterday, Anne, one of my early morning coffee companians, who appears homeless but I don't think she is [ she carries so much stuff and lately is porting a pink hair do ] stopped to ask me "what are you doing... I thought you were writing your autobiography" and it got me to thinking... maybe the books should be published in a "traditional form".

This morning the newsletter that grabbed me first was James Altucher's and he posed the question why and then listed the many reasons to write a book:

A legacy for your descendants. I would love if I could read a book written by my great-great-great grandfather describing what his life was like.

What’s the audience for that book? Just his descendants. But that’s a decent reason.

Getting to talk about something you are passionate about.
Often people write a book to get speaking or consulting opportunities that are very lucrative. If a company is trying to decide between consultant A and consultant B, they will pick the person who has written a book. I know this to be true.

Practice. Many people write several books before they manage to produce their big bestseller that changes their lives completely. Book writing is a craft and, like any craft, it takes time to build the skill set.
You aren’t limited by genre. You can write a book that YOU want to write as opposed to fitting a specific marketplace.

To complement your business. A friend of mine makes a special kind of makeup and moisturiser catered to women going through menopause. So she wrote a small book about menopause that explains in detail the chemical and hormonal reactions in the body and how certain chemicals can help. This complements her product sales.

And I am sure there are hundreds of other reasons.... I will share a couple tomorrow.

You deserve better… I know because I do too.

Originally published in Rebootology

When have a look at your life at the moment and you contemplate being rich, or even getting ahead and you feel it is impossible, you might find some answers here.

Firstly it might help to consider the difference between being poor and being broke, which are not the same thing. I have never been poor but unfortunately I have to confess to being broke acouple of times.

What’s the difference? Poor is the state of having nothing and never having the possibility of having anything. Some thing I witnessed first hand on a recent trip to Mumbai, India where 3 million people have absolutely nothing and in a remarkable state of affairs seem like they are happy with that and won’t in my lifetime do anything to change it.

Broke is a state of self inflicted misery where you owe more than you are worth and unfortunately many asset rich people are Broke because they can’t meet their everyday expenses. To be wealthy, you will have to work out how to get past broke. There are two ways to do that: the basic one is spend less than you earn. This means adjusting your lifestyle to meet the amount of money you earn which is difficult with out exercising self discipline against the constant barrage of credit companies and retailers shouting that you deserve it all and now! I wonder what happens when a unsolicited increase in your credit card limit arrives unannounced… I know I have been guilty of saying: “Is that all I can have…”

The second way to get passed broke is to earn more money. This is not as easy as most get rich gurus would have you believe but it is possible and highly likely if you invest the time to learn how to earn.

So how do you see your way out of your situation? If you think it as impossible, then it is. I want you to stop thinking that way. If you say it is impossible, it is. Stop talking that way. If you act as if it is impossible, it is. Stop acting that way.

To achieve the impossible requires discipline which is in short supply for most modern Aussies. Discipline requires work – a daily commitment of action designed to achieve your goal of being rich. Now here is where the goal setting spruikers let us all down. Thinking and acting “as if” you have achieved your goal without DOING anything about it is just plan lunacy. Every day needs directed activity to achieve your goals.

Do you reckon you could life a 200 kilo cow? Probably not yet many people on farms all around the world can do so without thinking twice about it. How is it done??

If you were to start lifting a calf from the first day it was born, and did so every day, its increase in weight would be so small each day that you would be able to lift it the next day, just as you had the day before. As a kid in Margaret River I remember watching a giant of a man called Dave Ironmonger lift two fully grown sheep, one in each hand, and throw them onto the back of his ute. A super human feat… no, Dave had been lifting lambs all his life, whether they were a day old or a year old. How did he do it?? Well, he just could because he did something about every day.

But what if you miss a day? This is what would happen… If for a week, you lifted the calf each day, you would not feel any difference in his weight and you would expect to, and actually lift him. However, say you missed doing this for a couple of weeks, and you came back to lift him. You would be confronted by a significantly bigger animal, who weighed a lot more, who probably didn’t want to be lifted and most importantly, you would be beginning to doubt you could do it… and a surprising thing would happen: That calf would be too heavy for you to lift!!

Impossible doesn’t care whether you are busy, don’t feel well, have other “pressing commitments” or just feeling down on yourself… all it requires you to do is to do something EVERY DAY, without fail, towards getting from where you are now to where you want to be in the future.

To go from broke to rich you have to spend a little less, save a little more, pay a little more off your debts, do a little more, and have to do it every day. You can’t miss a day.

But there is just one more thing you need to do to achieve the impossible… you need to make a decision right now to get rich because you deserve it. So stop for a minute and write down your decision to be rich. You must write it down for it to be real.

70? 62? 50? Strategies for Retiring at Every Age

Originally published in Rebootology

Adapted from article by DANA ANSPACH : https://www.thebalance.com/when-to-retire-a-guide-to-retirement-from-ages-50-70-2389050

Retirement is a big decision. It is one of the biggest life transitions you'll encounter. Research shows the happiest retirees start planning at least five years before their desired retirement date.

Have a look at what it takes to retire by 40, 50, 55, 62, 65 or 70.

Retiring at 50

Those who retire by 50 do one of a few things; they live on very little and save a lot, they inherit money, or they grow and sell a profitable business (or develop some other form of intellectual property).

If you are willing to live on less and don't have a lot of savings, consider a low-cost retirement lifestyle, such as residing in an RV in a campground, retiring in a low-cost overseas community, or living in a small apartment located in a place where owning your own vehicle isn't necessary. If these lifestyles sound reasonable to you, an early retirement may work for you.

If you've always been a career-oriented person, an "A type" or an over-achiever, and you have the funds to sustain an early retirement, there are other non-financial reasons for you to think twice before retiring. You may find retirement enjoyable for a few months, but without a new project to work on, too much leisure time may get old for you. Business owners and working professionals are those most likely to get bored in retirement.

Retiring at 55

If you have sufficient savings, retiring at age 55 may be more feasible than you think. Taking money out of retirement accounts early while delaying when you get the age pension just might be what the doctor ordered.

Retiring at 62
Apparently, 62 is the average retirement age.

Think you've got a good plan? If you've consolidated accounts, understand your Social Security claiming options, know which accounts you will withdraw from and have estimated the taxes you'll pay in retirement, then you're doing things right.

Retiring at 65

Sixty-five is a realistic retirement age for most. With Medicare benefits, Social Security and there are no penalty taxes for retirement account withdrawals.

But beware, for upcoming retirees full retirement age for your Social Security benefits is NOT 65 - it is age 66 or later. For most of you this means even if you retire at 65, you'll be best off waiting a year or so before beginning your Social Security benefits.

If you're still working at 70 you may be the type who never wants to retire. There is nothing wrong with that!

Sheep and more sheep

Originally published in Rebootology

I was at a business expo today [ LambExpo in Perth but that is a story for another day ] and I was struck by these statistics... in 1990 Australia had 170 million sheep and today 2017/8 we only have 70 million sheep.... that is a lot of sheep that have been eaten or exported.... 100 million sheep have ceased to exist in Australia since 1990.

So, there is a debate about at the moment about live sheep export - soon there will be no sheep to export.

When we think about red meat the actual number of animals that it requires for us to enjoy a "medium rare steak " as I am today at the 7 Mile Inn in Balcatta, it is mind bloggling.

And Ian said farmers in the UK know their animals by name.. it is all very challenging to me... but I hope thought provoking to you.

Social Proof is Legit

Originally published in Rebootology

Social proof is a huge factor when it comes to influencing our decisions, especially people want us to part with money.

For a lot of people, it’s the relevancy of the social proof that matters most. Is it from someone like them, or someone they already know and trust? Social proof can also depend on a number of other factors, such as how recent it was.

If you want to do better . Implement a system of social proof that allows for you to regularly obtain examples of social proof.

Of course, the best social proof occurs when you’re doing a great job so people want to recommend you!

Never Good or Bad - it just is...

Originally published in Rebootology

Less death, less motor vehicle accidents, less crime, less war... but if you consume normal media you wouldn't believe it...

Interestingly old style retail is dying along side NEW style retail.. Dick Smith Foods closes and the world's biggest food delivery service exits Australia. Business is business, regardless of the year it started.

So, as I sit at my no 2 office [ the one that serves great coffee ] I am watching the rain piss down... the joy of living in Perth is that you wonder at rain... it does so rarely it is an event.

Remember it just is...

Things to do differently

Originally published in Rebootology

At the start of this year, not as a New Years Resolution but as an awareness "Ha Ha"' I made a few decisions to do things differently - I will share a few and the outcomes

To be less angry

I had previously been convinced that being "angry" got a better result with organisations like Telstra but it didn't work so well in other situations, so I made a consciousness decision to be less angry.

How did it work out - Often I don't catch myself and I have an angry reaction and nearly universally the result is worse than it could have been. When I am purposely NICE, the result nearly always turns out better - even with organisation like Telstra. However, when I am deep in thought and somebody interrupts me my default [ which I have had for 60+ years ] of REACTING has never served me well. So, I am a work in progress on being "less angry"

Take things less personally

I have been accused [probably correctly ] of existing in my own bubble. Others have said to me "You don't need anybody else" or "you seem happier with your own company than with others". For an example, every morning I am up and walking before most people have even gotten out of bed.

In the last few presentations of our Management Seminars, I have been criticised on a number of accounts and I admit it has affected me personally. Where it was, over the previous 25 years, rare to get any negative feed back I was now getting letters to my boss [ me ] about how Wayne Mansfield was an old cranky sexist loud mouth. and I seriously considered giving the sessions away.

Why not??

On two recent occasions people said to me that my sessions were " a breath of fresh air" and one lady actually commented that she had been to dozens of professional development sessions and was dreading another BUT "You had me in the first 5 secs.."

Now taking things personally I would get a swelled head but by actually taking my advice, I have decided to put more work into the content and not take any issue with how it is delivered. Some people will like the material or not... some people will like the presenter or not... and that is OK. My position is that I should continually work on the material to make it relevant. And discuss things like #metoo, transgender at work, and the iPhone and how they affect the work place and how you should react to it.

I take responsibilty for outcomes

This is really hard. Whilst there are circumstance that occur and many influences on the outcome, the outcome is always a result of my decisions on what I have perceived the situation to be. If the outcome is less than optimum then I had the greatest influence on it and I can't blame anyone else even if it appears they "caused" it. It has been totally of my doing.

So there are three things I am trying to do differently

I want to know what obvious-in-hindsight changes you’ve made in your life in the past year or two. What did you try that made you wish you’d done it years ago? Say so in the comments. It doesn’t have to be big — it could just be a better way of grocery shopping.

All that matters is that it’s so much better than your old way that you wish you’d always done it.

Tips to write better - from James Altucher

1) Write whatever you want. Then take out the first paragraph and last paragraph

Here’s the funny thing about this rule. It’s sort of like knowing the future. You still can’t change it. In other words, even if you know this rule and write the article, the article will still be better if you take out the first paragraph and the last paragraph.

2) Take a huge bowel movement every day

You won’t see that on any other list on how to be a better writer. If your body doesn’t flow then your brain won’t flow. Eat more fruit if you have to.

3) Bleed in the first line

We’re all human. A computer can win Jeopardy but still not write a novel. If you want people to relate to you, then you have to be human.

Penelope Trunk started a post a few weeks ago: “I smashed a lamp over my head. There was blood everywhere. And glass. And I took a picture.” That’s real bleeding. My wife recently put up a post where the first line was so painful she had to take it down. Too many people were crying.

4) Don’t ask for permission

In other words, never say “in my opinion” (or worse “IMHO”). We know it’s your opinion. You’re writing it.

5) Write a lot

I spent the entire ’90s writing bad fiction. Five bad novels. Dozens of bad stories. But I learned to handle massive rejection. And how to put two words together. In my head, I won the Pulitzer prize. But in my hand, over 100 rejection letters.

6) Read a lot

You can’t write without first reading. A lot. When I was writing five bad novels in a row I would read all day long whenever I wasn’t writing (I had a job as a programmer, which I would do for about five minutes a day because my programs all worked and I just had to “maintain” them). I read everything I could get my hands on.

7) Read before you write

Before I write every day I spend 30-60 minutes reading high quality short stories poetry, or essays. Here are some authors to start:

Denis Johnson
Miranda July
David Foster Wallace
Ariel Leve
William Vollmann
Raymond Carver
All of the writers are in the top 1/1,000 of 1% of writers. What you are reading has to be at that level or else it won’t lift up your writing at all.

8) Coffee

I go through three cups at least before I even begin to write. No coffee, no creativity.

9) Break the laws of physics

There’s no time in text. Nothing has to go in order. Don’t make it nonsense. But don’t be beholden to the laws of physics. My post, “Advice I Want to Tell My Daughters”, is an example.

10) Be Honest

Tell people the stuff they all think but nobody ever says. Some people will be angry that you let out the secret. But most people will be grateful. If you aren’t being honest, you aren’t delivering value. Be the little boy in the Emperor Wears No Clothes. If you can’t do this, don’t write.

11) Don’t Hurt Anyone

This goes against the above rule, but I never like to hurt people. And I don’t respect people who get page views by breaking this rule.

Hope that is an interesting read.
