The Sins of the Father

Australian's of faith are divided today...

The "biggest scalp" has been claimed - maybe as is the way, just temporarily if the appeal process returns a different result - Cardinal Pell has been convicted of an unlikely charge but the chorus is signing loudly that they finally have their man.

I suppose people who have been ignored for so long feel vindicated.

My thoughts about the obscene wealth of the Catholic Church when as a tourist I visited the Vatican 20 years ago... I thought the Church was all about helping the poor... obviously, not here!

So, as someone who went to Sunday Mass for nearly 20 years so my kids would have a faith to choose from rather than a faith to choose... who wins out of this?? Not the victims are their champions as they move onto someone else to ear down... not the people of faith who have to rethink their beliefs... not the press who scream shrilly... nobody wins... it is a sad world.

Little Boy Lost

There is a heart-wrenching story on today's news mediums of two very young boys who went missing and have been found dead and I wonder what will happen to little ones actually being allowed to explore on their own?

My very young life was spent in a different time and a different place - the 1950s and 1960s Margaret River. I remember many hours playing war games on the banks of the Margaret River which was immediately behind our house. My mother, I am sure worried about me, but when pressed, she would say... "He will come home when he is hungry" which I usually did.

As a teenager, I was dropped off at the mouth of the Margaret River about 9am and picked up at 4pm being able to surf, swim or explore without supervision or company.

I am sure very few kids of the 21st Century have those adventures or freedom - I continue that spirit by walking 10 kilometres every morning in cities I visit as I travel which have included Los Angeloe, London, Rome, Barcelona, Naples, Doha, Sydney, Brisbane and all points in between.

I have to remind myself that our front door should be locked... don't do that and your insurance won't pay!

Who or what's to blame for us becoming wimps?? My thoughts are social programs such as "Stranger Danger" and "Neighbourhood Watch". Do you, your kids or grandkids ride a bike to school as I did... or did you give up riding when it became law to wear a helmet?

Mentors or Heros... Books change the equation

I am listening to Seth Godin as I write this post...
He said "Mentors are overrated BUT heroes are unlimited - just read about there thoughts.

When is a bullet train NOT a bullet train?

An article came across my desk about a traveller ticketing off a bucket list entry: The bullet train in Japan

What struck me is that the train got to 280 kilometres per hour and I remembered that the express train from Milan to Naples in ital has a speed readout that mesmerised me as it ticked over from 299 to 300 km/h but somehow it didn't seem that we were ticking off a bucket list event. And I am sure not many others were sitting in awe.

Mmmm maybe I will be nonplussed when I do get to ride that Japanese bullet train.

Too small to make a difference

Have you ever thought that you are o insignificant that your voice would be lost??

I am reminded about the mosquito and the elephant - tell that to an elephant after a mossie has bitten him on the trunk or, in my case, the mossie that bit my knee yesterday at the coffee stop... and that really hurts.

Whatever your standing in life, your voice matters.

Life Lessons

In the last few days, I have had some interesting distractions... the voice in my head keeps saying "how good does it have to get before you stuff it up?" and the other voice saying, "How bad does it have to get before you do something about it?"

I don't remember the high point but the low point surely came recently but I can feel the change in momentum because I asked for and got help from a number of people who really didn't know about the "how bad"

So:

In life, the question is not if you will have problems, but how you are going to deal with your problems. If the possibility of failure were erased, what would you attempt to achieve?

Thanks for all the help and kind thoughts.

Who are "they"?

Every day we hear the statement "they" won't let us do...

Do you know "who" they are?

The world is basically split into 2 camps - those who agree with "whatever" and those who don't! And time shows that neither side will actually change their point of view. The people with "power" in 2019 are those who haven't made up their mind. When one of these people makes up their mind it gives power to the majority view... for example, we have a political debate in Australia about asylum seekers on islands coming to Australia - 48% of the population don't want them to and 48% do... the 4% in the middle have the power... get them on side and you become the power.

In past times there was no mechanism to harness that 4% but social media has given them a voice -#metoo and the Twitterverse are examples.

I saw a story yesterday where a woman complained about being asked by another woman to cover up as she was dressed skimply on a plane - it became a story because she commented she had been "slut-shamed" and the media [ now irrelevant ] gave it a headline and it became a story... in times gone by, nobody would know and it wouldn't be a story.

I wonder how many like me thought "Good on" the steward for broaching the subject but her superiors were weak kneed for no supporting her 100% - they gave out a $50 voucher that just inflamed the offended [ that 4% ] even more...

Sad old world... my problem is that I like 96% od the rest but the 4% is really getting up my goat.

Ahhh well my coffee is getting cold!

Irish Dave ???

I know it isn't politically correct but he calls himself Irish Dave! An Irishman in America telling jokes none the less.

This morning I was excited by what I had to listen to - the Cal Fussman Podcast The BIG question...

The guests were Irish Dave [ an Irish american] and Arash Bayatmakou [ a Persian - Iranish American ] and their story was inspiring - the overcoming of total disaster and using laughter to build hope and achievement.

You should listen to it and all good podcasts!

Are you...

A rebootologist?? That is someone who enjoys their third wave life.

As I look at the way forward one of the recurring themes is the disaster that has been overcome... for those of us who don't have that experience those stories don't resonate.

For example... when I was a teenager and most of my adult life, claiming your issues were a result of mental health problems was a no-no. Therefore, I don't know of or relate to anybody who blames their mental health on their situation. Is that the same for you?

For example, when I was asked the first time "R U OK " I wasn't sure what the question was about?? But it is part of the movement to talk about "mental health." Another example of a situation or movement which I don't relate to is "The men's shed". Apparently, you do there to deal with your demons.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure there were people with mental health issues in my life. They were talked about differently - the dentist in Margaret River where I grew up, took a rifle and killed himself. People were shocked but that was life... depression was called "mental breakdown" and you spent a week or three in the hospital and came back fixed.

When I launched Rebootology I remember a successful but now retired businessman saying to me... "It's not like a men's shed is it?"

So, if you have lived a good life, and want more of it, join me on this journey.

Mmmm Saturday again

As you get more years on the clock, time seems to rush. It only seems like it was last Saturday and here I am again sipping coffee and posting to my Facebook page.

The NOISE today is Jeff Bezos, the world's richest man until the divorce comes through, hitting back at threats to publish "D##k" photos somehow stolen from his phone... I think the bigger question is... why??

As I hear these stories about embarrassing photos I wonder, sometimes aloud, why would someone do it when the world will find out?

And as I set out home on my 10 km walk I will probably wonder again - is $100 Billion enough to attract the girl?

Among the Daffodils by Erik Rittenberry

My face is beginning to show the battle scars of time. My heart seems to care less for things I once held as relevant.
As the years unravel, things make less sense.
The hangovers last a few days now instead of a few hours.
Beautiful dreams once lucid are now blurred. The idea of
God weakens with every atrocious deed I see in the world.
Politics is a hopeless endeavour, just like our obscene habit of obedience. The debt bubble we’ve swallowed as “prosperity”, is on the verge. The wars have grown tiresome, nobody cares about them anymore.
Everybody is trying to sell a lifestyle; they want you to live like them; they want you to buy their life-changing product or get behind their great cause; they have the secret, they say, just follow them.
The church wants confessions but I think we’re all out. The witless hipsters ride vintage bikes on Perth sidewalks to coffee shops that were once brothels and asylums.
Overmedicated & indebted men find it difficult to have conversations beyond their jobs or football. Women do yoga on weekends and gossip on long walks about husbands who’ve lost that intestinal fortitude.
The 88-year-old man, with his retirement and dignity, wasted away by inflation, bags groceries at the corner supermarket to pay for his myriad of medications.
The dogs have grown bored of their masters. The cats gave up on us long ago. The sparrows flutter higher in the sky than they used to.
The books of Whitman, Emerson and Thoreau sit dusty on bookshelves as the television scorches and burns.
Where’s the promise of victory?
We’re being led somewhere by the outside far away from the treasure inside.
As the tribes’ march in lockstep to their ordered destination, I lie in the meadow just beyond the bloody streams surrounded by golden daffodils, and as the rain rinses me of oblivion, I’m lifted from the hollow abyss into the universal radiance where the five senses become one.

Where I have coffee every morning at 5 am there is a TV and this lady Anne comes in, Sits as far away as she can after turning on the TV as loud as it goes... and then proceeds to do the crossword puzzle. And there is no such things as uplifting morning TV... and to add insult, she leaves,,, nobody is watching the TV but it is blaring out its crap...

Yes, I must be getting old... today I decided the eyephones would cut all the shit out and I am listening to Paul McCartney.

Why did I think of that before - that's right I am getting older!!

The Art of Story Telling

If you want to activate your thinking whilst on your morning walk, my recommendation is to listen to Cal Fusman's podcast Big Question. I use pocketcast app [ a paid one ] because I can increase the speed but you could use Apple's free option [ I am sure Google also have a free option]

Today he interviews John Livesay a salesman who talks about the value of Storytelling. It inspired me to get the audible book - great stuff and my mind is on fire.
